What happened
Nestene activity lies behind the Returned and a grief ritual that uses polymer material and entrainment. The crew expose the mechanism and secure Muir alive. Fire and evacuation make the crisis physical as well as emotional, and containment cannot undo the harm already done.
Where the book leaves us
The aftermath records seven confirmed dead and three missing. A warning is broadcast, quarantine measures remain necessary, and a seed ship escapes. Outside rescue has been promised, not shown arriving. The Doctor and Raven turn towards the TARDIS with the community’s future still requiring care. This is survival with unresolved costs.
