Everything Vareth Was
Book 22 · A spoiler-light introduction to the current adventure.
An invitation from the past
On Vorath, the Doctor, Raven and Davan study a civilisation’s layered writing. Light, shadow and the changing season affect what can be read. Their investigation brings them into contact with Solenne Varel, a rescue historian whose years on Vareth IV ended in catastrophe. The possibility of restoring a lost world draws them towards an increasingly difficult question: what would restoration require of the living?
The people at the centre
The Doctor brings accumulated experience and a duty to examine the proposal carefully. Raven must have room to make decisions about her own participation. Davan contributes close study and interpretation. MINO assists with records and analysis, while Solenne brings a deep personal and scholarly connection to the world they are trying to understand. Their different relationships to the evidence shape the adventure.
What the story asks
How much of a civilisation can an archive hold? Who can speak for people who cannot yet answer? What makes consent meaningful under pressure? The book explores these questions through an investigation whose technical possibilities and moral obligations do not advance at the same pace.
Before you begin
This book continues threads from Where the Light Goes Twice. Read in order for the fullest context. If you are browsing, the first chapter provides the immediate setting; this guide deliberately withholds the investigation’s discoveries and later decisions.
