An introduction
Cal’s distress signal from Europa draws the Doctor and Ava into The Spiral Accord. Language, omission and possible lives make his introduction unusually unstable, but he is a person caught in the danger rather than a device for explaining it.
Why this encounter matters
He becomes part of the travelling company and its growing bonds. The books let relationships develop alongside interventions in very different places, from wartime Europe to a treaty whose peace has become coercive.
