Davan accompanies the Doctor and Raven in the Vorath investigation. At the beginning of Everything Vareth Was, they compare early-spring conditions with the survey from their previous visit. They recognise that small shadows may carry a second layer of writing and test the observation with their instruments.

Interpretation has a texture

Davan’s contribution goes beyond collecting a measurement. In Chapter 3, they notice a change in the linguistic register of the passages under study: the later material sounds more like experience than formal philosophical exposition. The distinction changes how the group considers the writer behind the surviving text.

A companion’s own judgement

Davan brings hypotheses and evidence into a conversation where the Doctor is not the only person capable of recognition. Their work gives the investigation a pace: return, compare, test, and keep track of what has not yet been translated. Readers see understanding built through attention rather than delivered fully formed.
