MINO
An observant, dryly funny companion whose knowledge has boundaries.
More than useful information
MINO maps, records and analyses, but his place in the stories extends beyond supplying answers. He can question the Doctor and express preferences of his own. His humour often arrives in the measured language of someone who has already assessed the room and found it wanting.
The owl and the question of identity
The Once and Future Owl brings his owl form and questions about his identity into the foreground. Its opening pairs technical caution with a wonderfully unlikely alternative career: becoming a lighthouse. When others classify him by function, the story gives him a response of his own. The consequences belong in the book.
Following a pattern
In the opening of The Hong Kong Chronicle, MINO reports disturbances through the Doctor’s wrist device. His analysis helps locate a threat, but the characters must still investigate what it means for people living there. A pattern is a starting point for inquiry.
What to notice
Pay attention to the distinction between a measurement, an inference and a certainty. MINO is most interesting when his competence sits beside limited evidence, personality and relationships. His observations can sharpen a question without settling its ethical answer.
