Presence without deference
Raven can listen carefully without accepting the Doctor’s explanation. In the opening of The Throne of Ash, she questions the gap between what he has told her and the danger arriving through the TARDIS. The relationship leaves room for challenge as well as trust.
Attention as action
In The Hong Kong Chronicle, her attention to the ship and to what the Doctor is struggling to say helps establish the adventure’s emotional texture. She is affected by what has happened before. Travelling onwards does not wipe the slate clean.
A choice that remains hers
The opening of Everything Vareth Was gives Raven a central place in the investigation of Vorath and the proposed rescue of Vareth. Her participation matters enormously. That importance makes the conditions of her agreement more urgent, rather than making agreement automatic. This introduction leaves her decisions for the story to reveal.
Reading Raven
Watch the exchanges before and after the large dramatic moments: what she asks to know, where she pauses, and when she insists on time to think. Those scenes make the partnership convincing because closeness can coexist with an independent judgement.
