Solenne Varel

A rescue historian carrying an unfinished account of a lost world.

A profession built around attention

The records consulted in Everything Vareth Was identify Solenne with the Outer Spiral Civilisation Preservation Trust. Her work on Vareth IV lasted eleven years. She comes to the travellers with expertise accumulated among the people whose world she wants to recover, and with evidence that deserves careful examination.

Meeting the person behind the calculation

When Solenne meets Raven, she admits that Raven has existed in her work as a mathematical function for years. Encountering her as a person requires an adjustment. That first exchange makes the difficulty concrete: a plan can depend on someone long before its architect has properly met them.

More than a proposal

Her repaired coat still carries the Trust emblem. On her approach she pauses to inspect a joint in the ancient structures. These details sit alongside the scale of what she asks, showing a professional habit of observation and an attachment to work that did not end cleanly when its institution archived the project.

Listening without surrendering judgement

Solenne asks to explain what she needs before a decision is made. The story gives her loss weight while leaving her proposal open to challenge. Understanding her reasons is part of judging the request; it cannot substitute for Raven’s own agreement.

Reading boundary

This introduction draws on Chapters 2–3. It preserves the uncertainty around the restoration and leaves later choices to the novel. Her archive is explored, with a separate spoiler warning, in the Vareth IV entry.
