What happened
The travellers confront the Forgetter during the plague in Florence and carry out a limited rescue. The disaster remains larger than their intervention. On Earth in 2043, forgotten children face another memory predator; naming and testimony become part of resisting it.
Where the book leaves us
Ava, Cal, Anna and Matteo choose to remain and build a community. Their departure from the TARDIS is a choice of continuing work, rather than a rejection of the journey’s value. The Doctor is left to face quiet and rest. The closing movement shifts attention from spectacular rescue to the life that must follow it.
