MINO’s limits
The bronze owl can map, infer and remember. The stories become sharper whenever he says what those verbs cannot guarantee.
MINO is the Memory Inference and Navigation Organism: a bronze owl, a travelling companion and a specialist observer. His capability is real. So are its boundaries. This account separates what he measures, what he infers and what only another person can decide.
Measurement is not certainty
MINO can detect patterns that other travellers miss. On Mnem he finds overlooked contacts in the city’s map within twenty minutes, confirming that the Remanent follows a grid rather than a circle. The result is valuable because it is checked against records and folded into Callum’s theory. It is not an oracle’s pronouncement.

Models inherit their resolution
At the fold, MINO repeatedly gives conditional answers: a living signature is compatible with the baseline, but resolution limits confirmation. Later, his position tracking works only because Davan charts hazards, Raven supplies a bearing and the Doctor steers. The calculation is strongest when its dependencies are visible.

Archives cannot supply missing testimony
MINO logs, catalogues and preserves. He also knows why preservation matters: Fen trusted the city to keep her account. But no log can stand in for the person whose account it holds. On Mnem, his correct role is to protect the distinction between a record, an inference from it and the decision to hear it.

He can be unable to map what exists
When the TARDIS produces a third corridor branch, MINO’s map still shows two. The mismatch does not make either the owl or the ship a fraud. It marks a boundary between his current representation and a living structure that can alter its own interior. Good navigation begins by noticing that the map has failed.
Standard sensors can return nothing
The Vareth node formation is invisible to MINO’s standard temporal monitoring even at full resolution. The null result is not proof that the formation is absent; it is evidence about the instrument and the phenomenon. Later he calls a Division link plausible while explicitly leaving documentary confirmation outstanding.

Choice is not an output
Book 12 gives the clearest boundary. MINO can contribute a harmonic that helps hold a universe together and still insist on choosing the song. His preferences are not noise in a system. Equally, his analysis cannot decide for Raven, the Doctor, a witness or a city. Companion agency is one of the inputs that no calculation is entitled to erase.
A dependable owl, not an infallible one
MINO’s limits are not a downgrade. They make trust possible. He is dependable because he identifies uncertainty, invites corroboration and remains answerable to people whose knowledge differs from his. When he cannot confirm, he says so. When his map is wrong, the new corridor wins.
