Reading routes by mood
Choose the experience you want, then see what continuity you need before you open the door.
These routes are invitations, not substitutes for the full sequence. Each route names its order and the continuity it assumes. Premises are kept spoiler-light; completed-book titles can still reveal that a character remains part of the travelling company.
1. For cities that remember
Order: Book 16 · The Hong Kong Chronicle → Book 19 · The House That Remembered Him → Book 22 · Everything Vareth Was.
Mood: civic mystery, archives, people refusing erasure. Prerequisite: begin with Book 16 if you want Roxi’s place in the group established; otherwise Book 19 can be read after the general book companions.
2. For impossible machines with feelings
Order: Book 10 · The Forgotten Cellar → Book 12 · The Once and Future Owl → Book 19, Chapter 1.
Mood: strange interiors, mechanical personhood and a ship whose opinions matter. Prerequisite: the route works best after Books 1–9, because the TARDIS and MINO are already relationships rather than gadgets.
3. For politics under pressure
Order: Book 5 · The Shattered Treaty → Book 11 · The Throne of Ash → Book 22, Chapter 5 onward.
Mood: negotiation, institutions and decisions without clean exits. Prerequisite: read in publication order if you want every returning relationship; the thematic argument still stands on its own.
4. For history that pushes back
Order: Book 7 · The Day Gallifrey Slept → Book 14 · The Man Who Buried the Master → Book 20 · The Circle of Ravens.
Mood: old choices, dangerous records and consequences that outlive their makers. Prerequisite: this is the most continuity-heavy route; Books 1–6 are strongly recommended before Book 7, and Books 15–19 before Book 20.
5. For intimate aftermaths
Order: Book 6 · Of Time and Tragedy → The Day After the Doctor → Book 19, Chapter 18 → Book 20, Chapter 46.
Mood: care after the spectacular event, grief without shortcuts, and the ordinary work of staying. Prerequisite: the supplemental story is clearly labelled noncanonical; the two chapter selections contain late-series relationship spoilers.
6. For wonder with rules
Order: Book 13 · The Sun That Swallowed Tomorrow → Book 17 · The Iron Orchard → Book 21 · Where the Light Goes Twice.
Mood: enormous phenomena approached by measurement, fieldwork and humility. Prerequisite: Book 21 follows the consequences of Book 20; do not use it as a first introduction to Raven.
